Charles served as a Technician Fifth Grade, 231st Port Company, 492nd Port Battalion, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in York County, Maine prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on June 20, 1942 in Portland, Maine. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in transportation and also as Single, without dependents.

Charles was "Killed In Action" when the U.S.S. Serpens exploded while depth charges were being loaded off the shore of Lunga Beach. He was awarded a Purple Heart.

198 members of Serpens crew and 57 members of an Army stevedore unit were on board the ship and killed in the explosion along with one Army soldier on the shore.

He was originally interred overseas and was later repatriated here on June 15, 1949.
