Born in Billensbach, Württemberg, Germany, Gottlob immigrated to Nebraska with his parents and siblings in 1893. He graduated from Central Wesleyan University in Missouri in 1907 and married Katherine Ficken in Sedalia, Missouri, in August, 1908. He earned a Master's degree from Northwestern in 1908 and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin in 1915. Daughter Anita was born in 1913 and son Karl in 1917. In 1919 he began teaching at Lawrence College and had a long career as a professor of German, retiring in 1946. He was also one of the first professors at the Institute of Paper Chemistry and remained in that position until 1955. He was an active member of the First Methodist Church in Appleton, WI, and enjoyed spending time at Long Lake, where he and Katherine owned a cottage. He died in 1969 after a long illness.
