Richard Leon "Rocky" Sanapaw, age 55 of Keshena, passed away Monday, November 9, 2009 at his home after a long battle with terminal cancer. Born on January 26, 1954 in Keshena, he was the son of Marlene Sanapaw-Denny and the late Jerome Sanome and Merceline (Kinepoway) Sanapaw, Sr. On February 11, 1971 Rocky enlisted with the United States Navy to serve his country during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the St. Michael's Catholic Church in Keshena. In his free time he loved to go camping at Bear Trap Falls, riding in the woods, hunting, fishing, attending powwows, and spending time with his grandchildren. In his younger years, Rocky also enjoyed old-time fancy dancing.

Rocky is survived by: his wife, Mary Sanapaw; 3 children, Jody (Amber) Pocan, Henry (Taneil) Sanapaw, Brian (Michelle) Sanapaw; stepdaughter, Morgan Butner; 7 beautiful granddaughters, Corey Sanapaw, Danica Sanapaw, Karlene Sanapaw, Shaye Sanapaw, Payton Pocan, Mylee Dixon, Alyssa Waukau; his mother, Marlene; 9 siblings, Alberta (Aloysius) Zhuckkahosee, Roxanne Kaquatosh, Jerome (Rosanne) Sanapaw, Mary Jane Denny, Richard South, Elmer (Sue) Denny, Carla (Richard) Al-Jame, Margo (Daniel) Shawanokasic, Margaret (Kevin) Schlichting; numerous nieces and nephews; special siblings, Irene Maulson, Joseph (Evanell) Sanapaw, Isabel Cloud, Jerry (Marcia) Sanapaw, Leona Sanapaw, Barbara Sanapaw; and god children, Baby Charlie Summers, Tad Cloud, Michael Sanapaw, Donald Latender, Anthony Sanapaw, Elmer Denny, Jr., and Valerie Sanapaw.

Rocky was preceded in death by: his parents, Jerome and Merceline; and 5 siblings, Raymond Sanapaw, Leroy Sanapaw, Bernard (Elaine) Sanapaw, Patricia (James) Brisk, Baby Melissa in infancy; and 2 god children, Robert Cloud, and Jeffrey Cloud.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, November 13, 2009 at the St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Neopit with the Rev. David Kiefer officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by the Menominee American Legion Post #497 and the Veterans of the Menominee Nation at the church following the service. Family and friends may call at the Aloysius and Alberta Zhuckkahosee residence located at N2441 West Branch Road until the procession leaves for the church on Friday. Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano is assisting the family with the arrangements.
