1st Duchess of Inverness

Cecilia's exact date of birth is unknown. She was the daughter of Arthur Gore, 2nd Earl of Arran, and his wife Elizabeth Underwood.

She was first married to Sir George Buggin in May 1815. The marriage was childless, and Sir George died on 12 May 1825.

Her second husband was HRH The Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex, a son of King George III and Queen Charlotte. They were married at Great Cumberland Palace, London, on 2 May 1831.

The marriage contravened the Royal Marriages Act of 1772, and was considered legally void. For this reason, Lady Cecilia could not take the style of HRH The Duchess of Sussex, and so assumed her mother's maiden name of Underwood by Royal license.

Cecilia and the Duke resided at Kensington Palace, and Queen Victoria created her 1st Duchess of Inverness in the peerage of the United Kingdom, on 10 April 1840.

Since there were no children from her second marriage, the title became extinct on her death.

She continued to live at Kensington Palace after the Duke's death in 1843, and was buried beside him when she died in 1873.
