Mitchell Reed Turley, 81, died at Belleview Nursing Center Tuesday, November 10, 2009. He was born to Charles Leslie Turley and Pauline Blackman Turley on December 21, 1927 at Pittsburg, PA.

Cremation will be by Caskets, Inc. Johnson Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held Saturday December 5, 2009, at Grace United Methodist Church, Minister Ed Light officiating.

Mitch graduated from Beaver High School, Beaver, PA, in 1945. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946 and served until World War II ended. He was discharged in 1947. He then attended Penn State University earning a Master's degree in Geology in 1952. In 1951 he went to work for Shell Oil Company in Colorado, Texas, and Oklahoma. In 1951 he married fellow student, Joyce Trigiano (now Joyce Nicholas). They had 3 children, Reed Mitchell Turley, Kimberley Turley, and Paul Blakeman Turley. They lived in Nichols Hills and Lake Aluma.

He started Turley Oil Company after leaving Shell Oil Company and doing consulting work for another company. He was a member of the Oklahoma City Geological Society for 40 years, a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, and visited Taiwan in 1960, with fellow oilmen.

He married second wife, Meldean Husted, in 1974 and was a great stepfather to her daughters, Vicki Nichols and Shari Cowles. They had many happy years together. Mitch was a "Hail fellow well met." He had many friends, most of whom preceded him in death. He and Meldean explored caves in Oklahoma, scuba dived in Mexico, sailed in Jamaica. They had a house in Colorado that they spent much time in during the 1980's. Mitch was active in the oil business until his health slowed him down just recently.

He is survived by his wife Meldean; his son, Reed Turley and wife Rhonda, of Oklahoma City; son, Paul Turley and wife Sue of San Rafael, CA; daughter, Kim Turley of Incline Village, NV; stepdaughters: Vicki Beynon Nichols of Oklahoma City; and Shari Cowles and husband Lyman of Brandon, FL; grandchildren, Allison Turley, Steven Beynon and wife Anita, Jason Beynon, Dillon Cowles, and Sydney Cowles; and great-granddaughter, Sophia Beynon.

In lieu of flowers, we suggest a donation to Grace United Methodist Church, 6316 N. Tulsa (intersection of 63rd & NW Expressway), Oklahoma City, OK 73112.
