Nan Osmond Grass, age 90, died Wednesday, November 3, 1999, at her home in Provo.

She was born in Logan to Alfred and Annie Lloyd Osmond.

She was the sixth of seven children, five of whom preceded her in death.

She was married to Harry Grass on June 16, 1943 in Salt Lake City.

They were later sealed in the Logan L.D.S. Temple.

They had two children.

She grew up in Provo, where her father was head of the English Department at Brigham Young University for 31 years.

The affiliation of the Osmond family with the university spanned 99 years.

Five of her six siblings were teachers.

She graduated from Provo High School, and Brigham Young University in 1920 with an English major, and a business minor.

She received her Masters degree in English literature from Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. She also did graduate work at the University of Utah, the University of California at Berkley, Columbia University, University College at the University of London, and New School in New York City.

She taught in Utah high schools including Jordan, Ogden, South and West high schools in Salt Lake City.

She also taught at Snow College and the University of Utah.

After receiving her Masters degree, she followed in her father's footsteps by teaching in the English Department at B.Y.U. for 26 years, specializing in the English minor and English major programs with an emphasis on Shakespeare and John Donne.

She wrote a play entitled, "John Donne: Passionate Pilgrim" that was produced at B.Y.U.

She received the distinguished Karl Maeser Award for excellence in teaching in 1975.

Brigham Young University established the Nan Osmond Grass Professorship this year.

It was created as a perpetuity fund in memory of her significant contributions to the English Department.

Her church activities included teaching the Teacher Trainer (now Teacher Development) class in Pleasantview 2nd Ward in Provo for over 30 years and was also a member of two Sunday School stake boards and an M.I.A. board.

She is survived by two children and their spouses: Mahlon (Pam) Grass of Orem and Harriet Grass (Howard) Sutherland of Kennewick, Washington; ten grandchildren; a sister, Constance Bunnell of Palo Alto, California and a step-daughter, Carol Grass Winkler.

Two other step-children preceded her in death.

She also leaves a large step-family of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

All who knew her well were influenced by her example of a Christ-like life, and a great love for literature.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 6, 1999 at 11 a.m. at the Pleasantview 2nd Ward, 650 East Stadium Avenue, Provo.

Friends may call Friday, November 5, 1999 from 6-8 p.m. at the Berg Mortuary, 185 East Center Street, Provo or one hour prior to the service at the Ward Chapel.

Interment will be at Salt Lake City Cemetery.
