Lt. Franz was with the U.S. Army 8th Air Force, 96th Bomb Gp, 338th Squadron, Station 138, Snetterton Heath, England. He was a Bombardier on a B-17 Flying Fortress preparing for a mission over Berlin. While taxiing for take-off, the aircraft struck a refueling truck on the runway and caught fire. Lt. Franz and the plane's navigator were both killed.
