MOULTON -- Eddie Lee Mitchell, 87, of Moulton, a former Moulton city councilman, Moulton police chief and Lawrence County chief deputy, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Carraway Methodist Hospital in Birmingham.

His funeral will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Moulton Church of Christ, with Bill Becker officiating. Burial will be in Moulton Memory Gardens with Elliott Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends to- night from 6 to 8 at the church.

Mr. Mitchell was born Nov. 12, 1914, in Mount Hope to William R. Mitchell and Sarah Jane Mitchell. He was a barber for 10 years and retired from Worthington Corp. after 16 years. He was a Lawrence County sheriff's deputy for 40 years and served as the police commissioner while on the City Council. Mr. Mitchell was a former volunteer firefighter and served as a bailiff for the Lawrence County district and circuit courts until his death. He was the widower of Iwana Blankenship Mitchell and brother of the late William "J.W." Mitchell, Mary Dean Parker, Elizabeth Dunlap, Lillie Mae Stephenson and Edna Mitchell.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie Mitchell; three daughters, Betty M. Sims of Hartselle, Jane M. McCullough of Moulton and Carol M. Hamilton of Decatur; three brothers, Richard Mitchell and Albert Mitchell, both of Moulton, and Dan Mitchell of Milton, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Mitchell Sims, Michael McCullough, Neal Hamilton, William McWhorter, John R. Elliott, Jeff Black, Ricky McWhorter, Matt Cadrecha and Jason Hill.

Lawrence County law enforcement officers will be honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to the Moulton Church of Christ.
