According to DOD records, his Medal of Honor Citation stated:
Captian Lewis L. Millett distinguished himself "above and beyond the call of duty in action" in Korea, after he and his men came under heavy enemy fire on Feb. 7, 1951. He ordered and led a bayonet counterattack up the Hill 180 [now Osan Air Base in South Korea] killing enemy soldiers in hand-to-hand assault during which he was wounded by a grenade blast....
But by early afternoon, his company had taken the Hill 180.
Captian Millet's charge was so effective that the remaining Communist forces fled - but not before 47 North Korean and Chinese soldiers lay dead, [18 of which had been killed by Company bayonets]
He was presented the Medal of Honor by President Harry S. Truman in July 1951.
Col Millet retired after 31 years of service, during World War II; Korean Conflict; as well as Vietnam War.
In Sept. 2010, the Medal of Honor Society will hold its national convention in Charleston, S.C., giving Americans the opportunity to honor those like Lewis Millett who have given so much for this country.
