WW1 Veteran - USArmy
Granddad was born in Warwick County,Va (now the city of Newport News; merged 1958)
In WW1 France he was a pvt. in the USArmy. He told me he played poker with the German prisoners he was guarding. I don't know if the stories he told me when I was a kid were all true or not but Granddad was a hoot and I miss him.
He built a house in 1938 on W.Grace Street and lived there until he died in 1990. So many things happening in a time of quite rapid development. I wish I could go back and ask him about the things he "saw" in his lifetime. He was almost eleven when the Wright Brothers flew their plane in Kitty Hawk,NC. Aviation, something new to the world back then. I don't think Granddad actually ever flew on an airplane in his lifetime, I never thought to ask.
In civilian life he worked his way up through the ranks of the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad (RF&P) in Richmond, Virginia, retiring as a Conductor.
He worked for the railroad most of his adult life and saw the industry grow and before he died, at age 97, saw it declining.
