Leatta Schelske Ness was born Dec. 11, 1922 to Gottfried and Martha (Suess) Schelske, rural Bon Homme County, SD. They later moved to Hutchinson County, SD. She moved to Rapid City, SD during WWII to work. On Aug. 31, 1947 she married Paul C. Ness in Rapid City where they made their home. They had 4 children, 2 sons & 2 daughters.
Lee's Christian faith was an important part of her life and she was active in her churches, Trinity Lutheran and South Canyon Lutheran Church in Rapid City. She and Paul were also active supporters of the Black Hills Workshop.
In 2009, following Paul's death and her own declining health, she moved to Castle Manor Nursing Home in Hot Springs to be closer to her son and daughter-in-law. Leatta died Nov. 15, 2009, at Castle Manor at the age of 86.
Lee was survived by one daughter, one son & daughter-in-law, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two sisters, and a brother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul C. Ness; her son, Gregory Paul Ness; her daughter, Sandra Lee Ness Sittner; her parents, and one sister.
