Ninilchik resident Glenn C. Johnson, 69, died Dec. 1 at Central Peninsula General Hospital in Soldotna following a lengthy illness. Graveside services were held at the American Legion Cemetery in Ninilchik. Officers of the Anchor Point Veterans of Foreign Wars officiated. Pallbearers were John Johnson, Bruce Johnson, Clifford Smith, Shannon Smith, Mike McDonald and Marv Kobs.
Mr. Johnson was born Dec. 23, 1924, in Turlock, Calif. He served in the Navy during World War II aboard the USS Ormsby as a motor machinist mate, receiving an honorable discharge in 1946. He worked as a millwright in California, moving and installing heavy machinery and equipment in manufacturing plants. Mr. Johnson came to Alaska in 1979, moving to Ninilchik, where he worked as a commercial fisherman aboard his own vessel. He enjoyed hunting and was an outstanding marksman who belonged to various rifle and gun clubs in the area, according to his family. He loved being on the ocean and was an avid fisherman and scuba diver. His family said: "Most of all, he loved having his children and grandchildren around."
Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Joy, of Ninilchik; sons and daughters-in-law, John and Debra of Bakersfield, Calif., and Bruce and Bernie of Dorris, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Harry Dedini of Ripon, Calif.; daughter, Nancy Lee Smith, and her companion, Mike McDonald, of Sterling; grandchildren, Rene, Jerry, Ryan, lnar, Casey, Kelly and Tiffany, of Bakersfield, Henry, James, Benjamin and David, of Dorris, Glenn, Autumn and Amy Dedini, of Ripon, and Clifton and Shannon Smith of Sterling. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Edith. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society, Central Peninsula Unit, Box 2165, Kenai 99611-2165. Arrangements were handled by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
