Marsh was the nephew of W. H. Ferguson who owned a great deal of land around Bayard, NE and founded Beatrice Foods. Marsh had studied with his Uncle in his businesses and managed the 52 tenant farms of his uncle. He and his family lived at Sugar Valley Farm from 1911 until his death. He was Vice-President of the bank, President of the School Board (and oversaw the building of Bayard High School), President of the Lyons Club and an Elder of the Bayard Pres. Church. He also was a 32nd degree Mason. He did all this despite being rendered totally deaf from a high fever as a child. He was everything anyone could want in a grandfather.
