He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and he received a Purple Heart and a European-African Middle East service medal with three bronze stars. He was a retired furnace operator for Anchor Hocking, Plant 2 with 40 years service. He was a 50-year member of the First United Methodist Church, AFGWU, and American Legion Post 11. An avid bowler, he was past treasurer of his bowling league.

He first married Gladys L. Poling and they had one son, Clayton Reynold, Jr. He later married Gertrude Smith on February 15, 1947, and they had two daughters, Rhonda and Nancy.
