According to her obituary, Elizabeth was born near Castalia, Ohio, one of six children. The next year her family would move to Sandusky County. At age 89, she was described as "one of the pioneer mothers of this community, and the eldest resident of this section."
She and her husband John married in 1869 and raised four children. They were farmers north of Risingsun on the east side of the County Line Road, where her daughter Electa Bonawit would raise her family. As a widow Elizabeth lived with both of her daughters and with a granddaughter, Alsina Andrews who was a postmistress in Risingsun. The end of her life, however, was spent in the Bonawit home.
"While the deceased appeared to be a frail woman, she was very rugged too, and endured the hardships of pioneer life." Moreover, she enjoyed life. Despite a fractured hip at age 75 that lead her to sit in a wheelchair, she took an airplane ride at age 87 and became an aviation enthusiast--an event covered by the local newspaper. She also enjoyed the company of her children, grandchildren and her great-grandchildren who called her "Little Grandma."
A great-great granddaughter is in the possession of Elizabeth's well-worn Bible. It was noted in her obituary that, "Mrs. Leary was a religious lady all her life, living and exemplifying her belief. Her good deeds were mountainous."
Funeral services were conducted by her son Harry at the home of her daughter, Electa.
