MONROE, GA— LTC (retired) John William McKinney, 76 of Monroe, GA, died September 3, 2009 at his home.

Colonel McKinney was born December 11, 1932 in Altoona, PA and was preceded in death by his parents Clayton A and Edna Myers McKinney, and brother Clayton A McKinney, Jr.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, the former Peggie MacQuirter of Columbus, GA; his children Crickett Benefield of Orlando, FL, and John McKinney II and wife Paula of Monroe, GA; grandchildren, J.T, Anna and Samantha Rolling, of Columbus, GA, Matthew and Meagan McKinney of Monroe GA; and his sister Becky Campbell of Gadsden, AL.

Colonel McKinney's military career spanned 21 years, He served in Special Forces Group assignments with the 77th, the 7th, the 10th, the 5th , the 29th Infantry Regiment, 197th Infantry Brigade, and also was the Regional Senior Advisor to the 5th ARVN Division. His decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Air Medal with 'V' Device, Army Commendation Medal with 1st OLC and the Combat Infantry Badge.

Colonel McKinney also had a career with the State of Georgia, with Georgia Residential Finance Authority (now the Department of Community Affairs) for 17 years where he received a Governor's Award for Outstanding Service in State Government. After retirement from public service he owned and operated a small family vending business Snack with Mac Inc.

Visitation will begin on September 18th at 10:30 a.m. at Wages Funeral Home in Snellville GA, with funeral services to begin at 11:00 a.m. and he will be buried with military honors with internment at 2:00 p.m. at the National Cemetery in Canton, GA.
