Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Sept. 23 at the Church of Christ in Forestburg with the Rev. Sunny Cole and the Rev. David Hall officiating. Burial will follow at New Harp Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of The White Family Funeral Home of Bowie.
The family received friends at 7 p.m. on Sept. 22 at the funeral home.
Sledge was born Feb. 15, 1915 in New Harp to Ira and Bertie (Ray) Sledge. He graduated from Forestburg High School, and studied business administration at Decatur Baptist College in Decatur.
He then took courses of study at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, after serving his country for three years in the U.S. Army during WWII. He retired from ranching and Armco Steel Company in Gainesville in 1975.
He was a past director of Bowie State Bank and past president of Montague County Farm Bureau. He was a past president of Bowie Senior Citizen Center. He was a very caring Christian and member of the Church of Christ of Forestburg and The Carter Lake Road Church of Christ since a young child.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Sledge, Bowie; three sons, Garry Carter, San Antonio, Larry Carter, Montague, and Richard Carter, Krum; eight grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lorene Jones Sledge; and three brothers, Roe, John, and Bert Sledge, all of Montague.
