He was born Dec. 4, 1891 at Weeping Water, Neb. He graduated from Sheridan High School, with the class of 1911. While attending SHS he was a standout football player. He married Mary G. Michael May 6, 1917 in Sheridan.
Abel was employed in a grocery store in Casper until moving to Lodge Grass in 1920 where he operated a grocery store for 17 years. After selling the store he was employed by the Occident Elevator Feed Co. and later as a salesman for the Salt Co. He retired in 1969 and moved to Sheridan in 1974.
He was a mayor of Lodge Grass for one term and served in the capacity of town clerk at Lodge Grass for several years.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shrine, Scottish rite, York Rite bodies, Eastern Star, Elks lodge, Odd Fellows Lodge and Woodman of the World. He was a past president of the Lodge Grass Lions Club and a past master of Masonic Lodge No. 42, Hardin, Montana.
Survivors include his wife, Mary, Sheridan; a son Claude E. Able, Boise, Idaho; a sister Fern Barrett, Pasadena, Calif.; three grandsons and two great-grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursdday at Henne Funeral Home with Masonic Lodge No. 8 in charge. Interment will be in Masonic Oblong Square at Sheridan Muncipal Cemetery.
Memorials may benefit the Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children or the Omaha Home for boys in care of Kalif Mosque.
