Son of William Thomas "Buck" Lawrence and Sarah Amanda "Nettie Jeffery.

Husband of Avis Maxine Hyslop Lawrence. They were the parents of three children; Karen, Kenneth and Pam "PJ".

Harlin was born in Larkin, Izard County, Arkansas, not far from Melbourne. When he was about 9 years old his parents moved with his family to the Warner, Muskogee County, Oklahoma. Prior to WWII, he moved with his wife and son to Stockton, California.

Harlin served in WWII with the United States Army in the 280th Engineer Combat Battalion mainly attached to General George Patton's Third Army. He arrived in La Harve, France on 11/2/1944 and fought in the Rhineland, the Battle of the Bulge (Alsace-Ardennes) and Central Europe campaigns.

After the war he returned to Stockton, California, where he worked as a carpenter until he retired.

Harlin James Lawrence, 81, of Stockton died Tuesday in a convalescent hospital. He was born in Larkin, Ark., and lived in Stockton for 59 years. Lawrence was a self-employed construction contractor for 45 years. He served in the Army during World War II.
Survivors: children, Kenneth Lawrence of Grass Valley, Karen Mathews of Stockton and P.J. Jamison of San Francisco; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services: celebration of life, 11 a.m. Saturday, Carson Oaks Community Church, 6605 Alturas Ave. Committal: Cherokee Memorial Park. Mortuary: Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home."
