William James Redd was the son of Charles (Charlie) Augustus Redd and Nannie Lillian Thomas. He had three siblings: Clarence "Sam" Leonard Redd, Etta Marion Redd and Roy Franklin Redd.

William James Redd married Patty Lillian Simmons. They had eight children: five sons and three daughters.

Willie Redd was a carpenter and house painter. He was a native of Halifax County, Virginia but had resided in the vicinity of Colonial Heights for the last 14 years of his life.
