Mother of Sarah M, Cora A, Lloyd S, Martha E., Nora L, Lovina, Flora, Benjamin(e) & Thomas Plum.
Wife of James.
She was 65 years of age.

This lady was the ancestor of descendants now living in various states. It is sure that her life was changed by the events of the Civil War, as were the lives of all women of that time, both North and South.
Records were lost due to the burning of courthouses and other repositories over the years, definite dates for these women are difficult to determine. Some of the births and deaths of children were not recorded during the years of the war. A courthouse for this area burnt in 1869.
She and James had their household included in the 1870 census; it can be assumed the marriage was before that date and it is possible a marriage record was lost in the courthouse fire (see note below).
The (corrected) birth entry for daughter Martha, filed in 1943 indicates Mary's middle name was Catherine.
Both of these birth records for Martha give Mary's maiden name as Plum in the column for that entry.
The death records for daughters Cora and Vernie also give her maiden name as Plum, as does the death record for son Thomas.
The death record for daughter Flora gives her name as Mary Plum Plum.

1870 census lists George Plum, male, 6 years; this child does not show in the 1880 census with this household. No further information.
Daughter, Lovina, DOD 20 Aug 1884, 11m, 27d.
Son, Daniel, DOB 1887. No further information.
Son, Benjamin, DOD Oct 1888; age 1 month (diptheria). The ledger entries for these infants do not indicate burial place.

The Democrat, Lewis County, WV, March 15, 1869
The Court House of Preston County, with the Clerk's and Recorder's offices and the accumulated records of nearly half a century, were destroyed by fire on Sunday morning last. The building was nearly new, and was substantial and handsome. Insurance $8000-$4000 in the "National", of Wheeling and $4000 in the "Home", of Columbus, Ohio. The printing material of the Preston County Journal was also consumed; but it was insured for $6000, which judging from the appearance of the paper, was about all it was worth.
