The son of John & Eve Tschop, in 1860, he was a laborer living in Carroll Township, York County. He stood 5' 6" tall and sandy hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted February 8, 1864, in Springfield Township, York County, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg as a private with with Co. A, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pa), and honorably discharged with his company July 8, 1865. He is on the roll by his middle name.

He married Louisa Knaub (Kraut also reported) and fathered John (b. @1864, d. 1869), Amanda (b./d. 1866), Adam (b. 01/26/69, d. 09/22/74), and Ella Eva (b. 06/06/71 - married Charles Klinedinst).
