Frederick Alber was the son of Johann Georg Alber (1825-1889) and Margaretha Metzger (1826-1897). His parents were born in Württemberg, Germany.

Fred resided with his parents in Lodi Township, Washtenaw County, Michigan, at the time of the 1870 and 1880 census. In 1900, he is listed as a farmer in Perry Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan. Before 1920, he and Sarah moved to Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan, where he was employed as an auto worker.

He married Sarah Kuehnle before 1887. Their children were:
[1] Johanna Alber (1887-1985)
[2] Luella Alber (1893-?)
[3] Ben A. Alber (ca 1903-?) who married L. Viola Sova (ca 1909-?)
