John George Freeze was born in Pennsylvania, probably in Colebrookdale Township, Berks County. When he was very young, around the age of 3, he came to Frederick County, Maryland with his parents and siblings. They apparently settled in the Woodsboro area of the county. Some other researchers have felt that George was married twice, the first time to an Anna Maria Boehn. I've never been able to verify this claim. It certainly is conceivable, as he was 37 years old when he married Susanna Bowers, which was quite late for people to marry in that era. However, later documents, including George's will, and the settlement of his estate, give NO indication that there were other children. Also, the 1810-1840 census records give no indication that George had children previous to his marriage to Susanna Bowers. So, it can be assumed that, if George indeed had been married previously, he left no surviving children. The evidence is that he had 5 children with Susanna Bowers, the youngest, Sarah Ann, having died in infancy. The four surviving children all had large families and have left numerous descendants.
It is not known exactly when George Freeze settled in Mechanicstown (now Thurmont). However, we know he purchased land near Apple's Church in the year 1819, so we know he was in that area around that time. His eldest son, Michael Freeze, married Susanna Wetzel and apparently inherited the land where George lived, adjacent to Apple's Church. Second son, Joseph Freeze, married Mary Elizabeth Rouzer, daughter of Peter Rouzer, who also lived adjacent to Apple's Church. They moved into Mechanicstown and lived on East Main Street. Third child, Elizabeth Freeze, married Martin Newman, from Adams County, Pennsylvania and later Emanuel Forney, also from Adams County. Throughout Elizabeth's life, she lived in Adams County, Pennsylvania, as well as Frederick and Carroll Counties, Maryland. The youngest surviving child of George and Susanna Freeze was Jacob Freeze, who raised a family of 6 daughters and settled in Peters Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He tended to use the Frieze spelling of the name, which turned out to be insignificant, as he had no sons to carry down the name. George and Susanna (Bowers) Freeze are buried at Apple's Church near Thurmont, very close to the farm where they spent most of their married life.
