John Bryant Sears was the son of William I. Sears and Tabitha Bryant Sears of Wilkinson County, Georgia. He was orphaned in 1847 and lived with various relatives and friends.

He married first on June 20, 1858 in Eufaula, Barbour County, Alabama to Sarah Elizabeth Cariker. They lived in Randolph County, Alabama until 1866. Their first three sons and one daughter were the children born in Alabama. They traveled by oxen drawn covered wagon to Texas in 1866 and settled in Hood County in early 1867.

John Bryant Sears and Sarah Elizabeth Cariker Sears had four more children born after 1867. Sarah died just after child birth in 1874.

John Bryant Sears married Susan Elizabeth Townsend in Granbury, Hood County, Texas on January 19, 1975. They had eight sons.
