A. V. Ellis Dies in Knox, Educator Stricken While in Vietnam – Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Friday) for A. V. Ellis, 53, longtime educator and former Superintendent of Scott County Schools, who died Tuesday at St. Mary's Hospital in Knoxville. Mr. Ellis became ill while teaching in Vietnam and was recently returned by Air-Vac to Walter Reed Hospital, Washington, and later came home to Scott County for about two weeks before he was admitted to St. Mary's where he died. Services for Mr. Ellis will be held at First Baptist Church at Robbins, Rev. Floyd Warrix and Rev. Robert Burchfield officiating. Burial will be in Reed Cemetery at New River, with American Legion Post 136 conducting Military Honors. West Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Ellis, a native of Robbins, for many years prominent in Scott County school and educational activities, received his formal education in Scott County Schools. He took his B.S. Degree at Oakland City College, Oakland City, Ind., and took his M.A. Degree plus 45 hours at the University of Tennessee. After teaching in local elementary schools and serving as principal of Robbins High School for four years, in 1948 Mr. Ellis was elected Superintendent of Schools in Scott County. He served as superintendent for four years. In 1968-69 he worked as coordinator for the new Scott County High School, helping to develop the plans for the structure. He served in the Marine Corps as an officer during World War II, being discharged with the rank of Captain. He later entered Civil Service as an educator and served as an Educational Officer in Savanah, Ga., Glascow, Montana, and in Guam for eighteen months. He did educational work in Vietnam for nine months before becoming ill. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Berbin Ellis of Robbins, A. V.'s father, Mr. Ellis, suffered a heart attack at the hospital the day his son died and he is now a patient at St. Mary's Hospital in Knoxville. Other survivors include his wife, Kathleen Madden Ellis of Robbins; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Etta Neely of West Palm Beach, Fla.; one granddaughter, Kathy Ann Neely of West Palm Beach, Fla.; five brothers, Eugene Ellis of Robbins, Berbin, Jr. and Edward Ellis, both of Cincinnati, Ohio, M. J. Ellis of Hollywood, Fla., Kenneth Ellis, Ludlow, Ky.; four sisters, Mrs. Leola Hurtt of Ludlow, Ky., Mrs. Loretta Cirilli of Royal Park, Mich., Mrs. Glenn Colborn of Hazel Park, Mich., Mrs. Joetta Baugh of Covington, Ky.
