The following is the obituary for Susan (Sampson) Ellis copied from the 22 Apr
1918 issue of the Fulton Daily Sun:
AGED WOMAN DIED SUNDAY Mrs. Susan Ellis, 82 Years Old, Passed Away at Home
Near Boydsville
Mrs. Susan Ellis, 82 years old, a native of Kentucky, but almost a life-long
resident of Callaway county, died at 1 o'clock Sunday morning at her home, one
mile north of Boydsville. Mrs. Ellis had been ill for two weeks with acute
bronchitis and because of her advanced age it was known from the beginning that
she could not survive the attack.
Mrs. Ellis, whose maiden name was Sampson, was born in Kentucky June 3, 1835.
She was a daughter of the late John S. (Jack) Sampson, who came to Callaway in
the early days and was prominent in the affairs of the county. The marriage of
the deceased to William Ellis occured in her early girlhood and they lived all
their life on the farm on which her death occurred, Mr. Ellis' father having
lived there before him. The farm was known as the Ellis place. They had no
children. The death of Mr. Ellis occurred about 15 years ago. Mr. Ellis is
survived by a half brother, William B. Sampson, north of Carrington, and a
brother, John Sampson, who lives near Windsor in Henry county. Mrs. Ellis was
related to the well known Baker family and an aunt of Frank T. and Tom Baker of
Fulton. She was a Methodist in faith and had been a member for many years of
the Miller's Creek Methodist church. Mrs. Ellis was a home-loving woman, kindly
considerate of the well-being and happiness of her relatives and friends. She
lived a useful, active life and the memory of her many kind deeds will remain
long with those whom she has left behind.
Funeral services were held at 11 o'clock, Monday morning at the Miller's Creek
Methodist church, Rev. J.H. Hubbard officiating, and burial was in the church
cemetery."
