Second daughter of Joseph and Margaret Langfitt Ball. One of nine children. The Ball family started out in the Virginia/West Virginia area (boundaries changed over the decades). The parents later settled in Jefferson County, Iowa and many of these Ball family members are found to have lived, married, raised families, and died/buried in the Fairfield cemeteries in Jefferson County, Iowa (which this contributor is documenting with memorials to the extent possible).

Martha married Alexander Burns on September 25, 1853 in what was then known as New Cumberland, W.V. (boundaries may have changed since).

Seven children (six daughters and one son): Ida Magaret Burns, Teressa Agnes Burns Anderson (1859-1932), Wilmina May Burns, Atlanta Sherman Burns Crawford, James Ball Burns, George Anna (sic. a/k/a Annie; a/k/a Anna G. B. Donaldson) Burns Donaldson, Nevada Josephine Burns McMaster (1871-1931).

The following obituary notice was found in the genealogy collection of the Fairfield Public Library in Fairfield, Iowa. Whether or not it was edited in the transcription process from the original isn't known. It is being presented here verbatim:

"Coraopolis Record
Fri. August 28, 1914, Page 1, col. 3.

MRS. MARTHA JANE BALL BURNS, aged 83, widow of Alexander D. Burns, died Friday August 14 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John McMaster in Vance Avenue. Surviving are the following children: Mrs. John J. Crawford of State Avenue; Mrs J. P. Anderson of Central City, Neb.; Mrs. Thomas Donaldson of Midway and Mrs. McMaster. Mrs. Burns had been a resident of Coraopolis for 16 years. She was a member of the First Christian Church, North Side, Pittsburgh. Funeral services were held at the McMaster residence on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock and were conducted by Rev. C.K. McGeorge assisted by Rev. F.N. Johnston D.D. of the First Christian Church of Pittsburgh. Interment was made in Valley Cemetery, Imperial."
