Dewey Abshire Anderson Via* was born 17 Jan 1902 on White Oak Mountain, W.Va., a son of James Anderson Elmer Via and wife Emma Stella Gadd. (Birth record, West Virginia Vital Research Records Project. http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_bcdetail.aspx?Id=2505055) It is my understanding that Dewey sustained an injury at birth that resulted in a paralysis of the left side of his face.

His father Anderson, 25, died on 21 Nov 1902 in a workplace accident when a tree fell on him. Dewey was 10 months old.

In 1904, Stella married Charley Odey Farmer of Virginia. Farmer was abusive and threatened to hurt little Dewey if Stella left. Mother and child managed to escape with the help of one of Farmer's sisters and Stella got a divorce.

In 1907, Stella married Leonard Haliburton Vest, a widower. Mr. Vest had a son Claude Raymond Vest (1901) with his first wife Clara Alice Plumley. Clara died within months after Claude's birth. Together Leonard and Stella had six daughters: Verna Veatrice (1908), Golda Mae (1911), Sylvia (1913), Nina Arabelle (1916), Josephine (1920) and Ola Pearl (1922). Sylvia and Josephine died within a few hours of each other in 1921 of diphtheria. (Stella's family Bible records the date as Sept. 2, 1921, for both girls. However, their sister Nina remembers Sylvia dying at 9 p.m. and the Josephine dying at 9 a.m. the next morning.)

Dewey, who had health problems throughout his life, died at age 34 on 12 Sep 1936 at his White Oak Mountain, Raleigh County, W.Va., home. He never married.

His sister Verna Vest Bennett named her son Dewey Ralston Bennett, born in 1934, after Dewey.

* In a family Bible, Dewey's name is written as A.D.A. Via. The handwriting is unfamiliar to a family member who has the Bible. The notation looks like it was added years after his birth. Also, due to an error in the original record, his birth is recorded under Dewey Gadd, 17 Jan 1902 http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_bcdetail.aspx?Id=2505777 There are also transcription errors, misspelling of his parents' names -- father should be J.A.E. Via and mother Stella E. Gadd as it is in the original record.
