Mary Ellen Gadd was born on 30 May 1875 in Raleigh County, W.Va., a daughter of Powell Wade Gadd and wife Emma Melissa Martin Gadd. She was one of 11 children.

Mary, 17, married John H. Vest, 23, son of Charles Jackson and Mary J. Vest, in 1892.

Mrs. Vest died on 13 Aug 1925 in Blue Jay, Raleigh County, W.Va., of tuberculosis complicated by asthma.
