Anchorage resident Klaas Andrew "Andy" Karels, 69, died Nov. 15, 2005, at Providence Alaska Medical Center. A funeral was held at Anchorage Funeral Home. Burial was at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. There was a reception held afterward in Anchorage. Dave Olson officiated.
Mr. Karels was born Jan. 21, 1936, in Amboy, Minn. He moved to Anchorage during the mid-'50s. Mr. Karels was a member of Roofers Union 190 and retired from Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility. He served in the Army during the Korean War. Mr. Karels enjoyed hunting, fishing, berry picking, playing cards, his family and holidays. His family said: "Andy loved to cook and spend time with his family and friends. He enjoyed doing things for people. He cared about mostly the little things that would seem insignificant to most. He had many friends of all walks of life; he touched all he came in contact with in a very memorable way. He will be greatly missed by all."
Mr. Karels is survived by his wife, Carrie Karels of Chugiak; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Klaas Karels of St. Paul, Minn., John Karels of Arizona, and Donald and Susan Karels of Anchorage; two daughters and one son-in-law, Glenda and Richard Karels-Smith of Anchorage and Geniene Karels of Quinhagak; 13 grandchildren, Vera, John, Morgan, Richard, Blake, Carrie, Klaas, Cori, Matthew, Perry, Melissa, Shane and Mandi; and three great-grandchildren. Arrangements were by Anchorage Funeral Home and Crematory.
