Anchorage resident Gilbert S. Karmun, 71, died Oct. 21, 2005, at Alaska Native Medical Center after a short illness. A graveside service with full military honors was at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. Pallbearers included Harry Karmun Jr., Harold Karmun, Gilford Barr, Dean Barr, Justin Andersen and Clifford Johnson.

Mr. Karmun was born May 26, 1934, in Deering, to Alfred and Mamie Karmun. He served in the U.S. Navy from Aug. 8, 1955, until his discharge on Aug. 7, 1959. He received the Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Karmun had lived in Deering, Candle and Anchorage. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Deering for 26 years and was a member of the board of directors for NANA Regional Corp. from 1976-94. Mr. Karmun was the former mayor of the city of Deering. His family wrote, "All of his nieces and nephews had a special place in his heart."

Mr. Karmun is survived by his brothers and sister-in-law, Harry and Alice Karmun of Wasilla and Martin Karmun of Anchorage; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sally and Cecil Johnson of Nome, Penny and Pierre Boutet of Anchorage, Mamie Karmun of Anchorage, and Stanley Andersen of Nome; son, Wayne Iyatunguk of Anchorage; niece (who he raised as a daughter), Augustina Karmun of Anchorage; uncles and aunts, Dan and Ethel Karmun of Nome and Wilber Karmun of Deering; numerous nieces and nephews throughout Alaska; and close friends, Jerry Pitka and Ben Gregg Sr. of Anchorage, Stanley Custer of Shunghak and Jimmy Gregg of Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents. Arrangements are with Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E St.
