On 12 Jul 1861 Luther, a farmer, mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Sterling, Massachusetts. He was 24 years, 11 months and 16 days old.

Luther Sawyer Hapgood, Joseph Henry Hapgood, and Luther Maynard Hapgood, two brothers and their father, served together in the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Co. A.
On 30 Oct 1862 he mustered out of the 15th Massachusetts, discharged for disability.

Starting 18 Aug 1864, he served secondly in the 4th Massachusetts Heavy Artillery, Company K, being honorably discharged on 17 Jun 1865.
