Philena "Nellie" Kendall, was born one year to the day before her adopted Oregon became a state. Her parents were Jackson Joseph Kendall and Harriet Arabella Chipman. Harriet was the oldest sister of Mate, Eva and Lulu Kendall and also had a younger brother named Albert. She married her first cousin, Oscar J. Kendall, in Hanover, Wisconsin. They moved to the Alaska Territoy during the 1880s, but settled permanently in Portland, Oregon by 1890.

Nellie's husband was a famous Portlander in the 1890s. He was murdered in San Francisco in 1907. They had no children, but Nellie did help raise her niece Harriet Lynch, the daughter of her sister Mate. Nellie remarried a man named Daniel Llewellyn late in life. The home she shared with Oscar still stands on 54th & Woodstock in Portland.
