My "Granny" Corda was the widow of Earnest Raymond Bowen a veteran of WWI. He served in France 1918 to 1919 with the American Expeditionary Forces, 88th Div, 350th Machine Gun Company as a buglar. Married on 24 Sep 1920 at Carthage, MO. Mother of Mary Lindley, Martha Ann Oldham, William R. Bowen, Virginia Ball, & Nancy Sparks. Beloved grandmother of 21 grandchildren & 28 greatgrandchildren. She was the daughter of Charles F. Harrill and Cora Alice Brown. They moved from Illinois to Carthage about 1905 where she spent the remainder of her life. Widowed at the age of 40, she worked in the shoe factory & Big Smiths. She later earned a living as a dressmaker, & supplemented her income by house cleaning and taking in laundry. She provided hospice care for her Aunt Mary Ropp in the late fifties. Corda taught Sunday school for decades, and was an active member of the First Church of the Nazarene. She was survived by her five children and two sisters, Helen Neville of Carthage, & Thelma Hall of Tremonton, UT. I will be forever grateful to her for taking me into her home, and letting me stay with her during my high school years. She is sorely missed by all who loved and knew her. While I was in the Navy, I called her frequently just to hear her voice and find out how she was doing. Whenever I visited on Leave, we would always have a family get together at the Park. I was stationed win Antarctica when she passed, and could not attend her funeral. They took a picture of her in casket, but I was not interested in seeing it. I wanted to remember her alive and smiling. I visit her grave every time I am in Carthage.
