Son of John Keeney & Mary Hempstead. Little is known about the life of Chistopher Keeney in St. Louis, other than that he practiced as a physician.

Dr. Keeney's mother, Mary Hempstead was born in New London, CT, daughter of Stephen Hempstead & Mary Lewis Hempstead. There she married John Keeney, a widowed father and sea captain, in 1806. The following year their son Christopher was born. John Keeney died in New London, CT in 1810.

On June 12, 1811, Mary Hempstead Keeney, her son Christopher and step-daughter Charlotte Keeney left New London for St. Louis, MO. There, they joined Mary's father Stephen and brothers, Edward & Stephen Jr who had previously settled in St. Louis, taking advantage of the city's rapid growth following the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis & Clark Expedition. The Hempstead family settled on land just north of the city. They later gave part of their land to create Bellefontaine Cemetery.
