John J. Cathey, 97, Reynolds Street, died at a local hospital Sunday after an extended illness. Graveside service Tuesday 2:30 p.m. Forrest Cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Survivors: wife, Mrs. Edith Holcombe Cathey; daughter, Mrs. Annie Jo Cathey Otey, Gadsden; sons, John H. Cathey, Gadsden; Andrew B. Cathey, Huntsville; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and three nieces.

Mr. Cathey was a native of Sumpter County, coming to Gadsden in 1907 and has resided here most of his life. Mr. Cathey was a pioneer in pathology of plant life and its diseases. He was one of the early advocates of the conservation of our natural resources. His knowledge of early Alabama and Gadsden history and its settlers was vast and he shared it with all who were interested. He was the founder of The Cathey Tree Expert Company, the first of its kind in Alabama. He owned and operated it in the South for over 50 years. He was forest engineer for the Alabama Power Company in the 1920's and the Georgia Power Company in the 1930's. He had been retired from Georgia Power since 1945. Mr. Cathey was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
