A GOOD MAN GONE

Died, at his home in Augusta, Thursday, April 25, after a short illness, Walter C. Welch, aged about 49 years. He was born in Alabama in 1852, moved to Texas with his parents in 1855, where he resided until May, 1861, when they removed to Minnesota where he was educated in the common schools, which was compelted and rounded out in the school of experience. Of this he had more than falls to the lot of most boys, because his father died when he was yet but a lad and he had not only to fight his own way, but to assist his widowed mother in the battle for bread and the comforts of life for the family.

He came to Kansas and to Butler County in December, 1877, and settled in Bruno township. In 1881, he moved to Augusta where he has since resided. He has always been a public spirited man and taken an active interest in public affairs and the welfare of the community. That his worth and ability were recognized and appreciated is evidenced by the fact that for three terms successively he was elected trustee of his township and served satisfactorily and with credit to himself. He has also served ably in minor offices. He has also taken an active part in county politics and in 1893 was the populist candidate for register of deeds and again in 1900 was candidate for probate judge. His race in both campaigns was a credit to himself and his party.

He was a member of the Christian church and his every day life was consistent with his profession. He was universally respected and beloved by all. His example was one well worthy emulation. He was also a member of the Masonic fraternity, the K. of P. and A. O. U. W. and prominent in the councils of the Orders.

He leaves a wife who has sincere sympathy of all in her sudden and awful bereavement.

The funeral occurred this afternoon, Friday, at 3 o'clock under the auspices of the Masons and he was laid to rest in Augusta cemetery.
