Aaron Junior "Dunnie" Pettry, 86, of Marmet, formerly of Ashford, passed on to be with his Lord Sept. 14, 2009, surrounded by his loved ones, in Select Specialty Unit at St. Francis Hospital, Charleston, after battling lung disease.

Junior was born Dec. 18, 1922, at Joe's Branch in Comfort.

He loved his family, country, the Cincinnati Reds and gospel music. From the age of 10 he sang and played guitar in churches all over Southern West Virginia. He sang with the Happy Valley Boys for over 30 years. He was a proud veteran of World War II and UMWA, having spent 2 1/2 years crossing Europe and 40 years in the coal mines.

He held a life membership to the PTA for his volunteer work with the youth in Boone County. In the early 1960s he helped bring Little League Baseball to northern Boone County. He coached and held league office for many years in the Boone Northern Little League, several as league president. He was also an advocate of female sports. In 1964 he was instrumental in forming a female softball league in northern Boone and southern Kanawha counties when no female sports existed.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Gurski Pettry, on Feb. 18, 1985; parents Aaron Sr. and Marie Morgan Pettry; sisters, Sally and Margaret; brothers, Adron, Pete, Eugene and Okey; and granddaughter, Camy Jo Pettry.

Surviving is a heartbroken family: daughters, Frances and husband, Bruce Jenkins, and their children, Angie, Diane and Mark, Barbara and husband, Roy King, and her children, Terry Lee, Candace, Brett, Kristina, and Vanessa Sharon and husband, Roger Toney, and their children, Chad, Chandra, TiAnna, Noah Bert and Marylea; son, Aaron Lee and wife, Jo Ellen Pettry, and children, Aaron, Matthew, Jeremiah, Jay, Tim, Thomas, Nicholas, Cheyenne, Britney, Jordan, Samuel and Ryan; sister, Barbara "Kitty" Hurley; 25

great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Funeral services were held on Sept. 18 at Ashford Church of God Holiness with Pastor Bart Elkins officiating.

Burial followed at Barker Cemetery, Ashford, with military graveside rites conducted by Daniel Boone VFW Post 5578 Madison.
