In infancy, Charles was baptized at the St Paul's Lutheran Church in Chapin, Illinois. He lived at his parent's home until the age of 29 when he moved to Peculiar Missouri to start his own farm.
On October 13, 1886, Charles married Emma (Huffman) Brockhouse (1864-1965). Charles and Emma had eight children.
Charles died on November 18, 1931 at his home in Peculiar, Missouri from chronic nephritis, most likely due to years of untreated high blood pressure. He was interred at the Peculiar Cemetery on November 21, 1931.
