John and Clara had four sons and one daughter: Vinton Patterson Brockhouse (1884-1967), Cecil Allen Brockhouse (1885-1960), Ruth Irene Brockhouse (1887-1890), Herschel Glen Brockhouse (1891-1966), Thomas Edgar Brockhouse (1895-1983).
John worked as a live stock dealer for the thirty years preceding his death on October 18, 1918. He died of chronic nephritis and was interred at the Peculiar Cemetery.
