MRS. RACHEL SOWDER
Rachel Ausmus was born near Tazewell, Claiborne county, Tennessee, Nov. 1, 1827. She was married in the same county to H. M. Sowder Dec. 16, 1847. In the fall of 1860 the family moved to Pulaski county, Kentucky where they lived until September, 1875, when they came to Derby, which has been their home since, except three years spent in Liberty, Neb.
Mrs. Sowder was the mother of thirteen children. Four sons and three daughters survive her. They are D. L., W. H., Benjamin and E. M. Sowder, Mrs. Anna Smith and Mrs. C. H. Davis of Derby and Mrs. Sarah Smith of Woodburn. Mrs. Sowder was a devoted wife and mother, a kind friend and neighbor and a consistent Christian.
For many years she has been a great sufferer with tumor of the face and neck which finally caused her death at her home Tuesday, April 15. Throughout all her lingering illness she was very tenderly cared for and every wish gratified by her husband and children.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 o'clock at the home, conducted by M. Parkin. Interment was in the Murray cemetery. The sorrowing ones have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement.
