Annie Sleavin 7, of Santa Clarita, California.

Her father Michael drowned while attempting to save her, she who had been swept away by a wave of the coast of New Zealand.

Annie, her father Michael, her mother Judith and her brother Ben, 9, had started off on a 5 year around the world voyage on their 47 foot sail boat in 1993. They were in the 3rd year of the voyage when South Korean cargo ship collided with their sail boat. Ben went down with the sail boat. Michael, Judith and Annie managed to get into their rubber dinghy.

They tried to get help from the crew of the ship that had collided with their sail boat. They were totally ignored and left to die. After the collision Annie was swept away by a wave; her dad Michael tried to save her and drowned also. Judith, the lone survivor could only watch as they drowned; Judith had a broken back and a fractured skull.

Annie's Godmother, Hestor Rumberg has written a book on the family's ordeal; it's called "Ten Degrees of Reckoning".
