Thomas Evans Byars, Sr, age 65, died Sunday, September 14 at Houston Community Hospital. Funeral services were held Monday, September 15 at Houlka Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery with the Rev Sammy Little and the Rev J C Burkes officiating.
The son of the late David Evans Byars and the late Ora Dee Holliday, he served as Marshall of Houlka for 29 years and as Sheriff of Chickasaw County for four years, 1972-1976. He was born in Chickasaw County and was a member of the Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Laverne Farr Byars of Houlka; one daughter, Jan Moorman of Pontotoc; one son, Thomas Evans Byars, Jr of Houlka; one sister, Mrs. Virginia Owens of Pontotoc; one brother, James Byars of Pontotoc and five grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Doug West, Bill Moore, Donald Scott, Jimmy Guy McDonald, Rick Huffman, Robert Farr and Andrew Lyles.
Houlka Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
