J. M. GRIMES

James Marion Grimes, son of John and Eliza Grimes, was born in Brown county, Indiana, Dec. 10, 1853, and departed this life at his home in Derby, Iowa, March 7, 1936, at the age of 82 years, 2 months and 26 days.

When two years old, he came with his parents to Lucas county, Iowa, settling on a homestead between Chariton and Lucas where he grew to manhood.

By working through the summer and going to school in the winter, he fitted himself for teaching, and for several years was one of Lucas county's most successful teachers. In 1881 he accepted a clerkship in the Chase & Anderson store in Lucas, his great ambition at that time being to own a store of his own.

On Sept. 2, 1886, he was married to Miss Belle Tracy, of Whitebreast township. After making their home in Lucas for two years, he and H. L. Grimes bought the Ben Morris general store in Derby and began business in a small way under the firm name of Grimes & Grimes. Later this partnership was dissolved by the death of H. L. Grimes, who was killed by lightning, and George Winslow became the new partner.

When a young man he was converted in an old fashioned revival meeting held in a country school house. His faith in Christ as the all suffering Savior, never wavered through the years, and this faith was manifested in an active Christian service.

He became a member of the Goshen Baptist church in 1891 where he served as a deacon for 35 years. He also acted as clerk of the Southern Iowa Baptist Association for several years. He always had a deep interest in the welfare of the community and never spared himself in ministering to the needs of others.

Mr. Grimes was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Besides the devoted wife and a loving niece, Merl Davis, who had shared their home since early girlhood, he leaves to mourn his departure several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted in the M. E. church at Derby Sunday afternoon at two o'clock by the Rev. A. E. Beals, of Russell. The text used was 2nd Corinthians 5:1. Interment was in the Derby cemetery.
