Morris H. Layton, 94, of Albany, passed away Friday, December 4, 2009 at his residence.

He was born June 15, 1915 in Halsey, Oregon, the son of Guy and Violet (Hillman) Layton. Morris was a descendent of Linn County pioneers of the Oregon Trail of 1847. Violet died when Morris was an infant. Guy then married Minnie Arthur of Halsey and Morris grew up on the farm, attended Oak Plain Grade School and graduated from Halsey High School in 1933.

Morris worked as a baker, developing his skills at several bakeries. In 1948 he opened Layton's Bakery in North Bend. In 1960 he moved to Coos Bay and opened a bakery. After working 15 years at the Albertson's in North Bend, Morris finished his career in 1980.

A kind and generous man, Morris was a very successful businessman. He enjoyed fishing, reading everything regarding history and loved utilizing his pilot's license.

On August 24, 1947 in Coquille, Oregon, Morris married Violet J. Howard. She preceded him in death, June 20, 2006.

Survivors include a son, Thomas Layton of Eagle Point; daughter, Sharlene Layton-Matsunami and husband Sam of Eugene; grandchildren, Laura Undis and Scott Gould; great-grandchildren, Kristen Inskeep,
Mark Underdahl and Jessica Undis; great-great-grandchildren, Fletcher and Lyla Inskeep; niece, Gay Howard; and nephews, Henry Truax, Doug Howard, and Steve Howard.

Mr. Layton was also preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, June Layton-Truax.

Private family services are planned.
