Daughter of John Waddill and Elizabeth Roisten; the latter surname is documented in several biographical sketches of Waddill family members, including one for John Waddill. However, the spelling Roisten is almost non-existent in a global search of U.S. census records, so Royston is more likely the one used by the family.

Margaret's husband, Marvin S. Cook, was the informant for her death certificate. He reported that her father's surname was spelled Waddle and that her mother's maiden name was King. It was Margaret's paternal grandmother who was a King.

The date of birth on the death certificate is November 19, 1826. Viewing census records in an attempt to generally support that year of birth (because death certificates by themselves are not proof positive), we find early listings that are wildly disparate. She and Marvin were married in 1857 and the fact that she was a decade or so older may have been a factor in the ages reported in the next two censuses, when she barely aged:

1850 (base date June 1) - age 30
1860 (base date June 1) - age 27
1870 (base date June 1) - age 33

Accuracy improved beginning in 1880:

1880 (base date June 1) - age 52
1900 (base date June 1) - age 71, born Nov 1828
1910 (base date Apr 15) - age 83

1826 is a birth year we can record, but not with overwhelming confidence.
