When Britain first attempted to domineer over America, he was one of her earliest patriots, and served in several provincial congresses, until his well known abilities in the science of artillery induced his countrymen to summon him to the field, where he served to the end of the war. His private virtues endeared him to numerous friends, and his acts of friendship and generosity will engrave his name deeply in the memory of the many who experienced them.
