J.T. Everest removed from his birth place of Addison, Vermont at six months and remained within a two mile radius of Clinton County, New York the remainder of his life.Most of his life was spent in Peru and the later in Schuyler Falls. J.T. had a very public civil life in Clinton County. As an adult he was an attorney who was for several years one of the three county Judges. He served for sixteen years as Justice of the Peace, and was for many years honored with the office of Supervisor of the Town. He served one term starting in 1855 as Legislature of the State becoming the first man from Clinton County to be nominated and elected to this seat. He was a highway commissioner for a number of years. Where thereafter, he was elected to the office of State Prison Inspector, an office held by three people. In 1860, J.T. removed to the village of Schuyler Falls were during the Civil War, he served as a the provost marshal in his district.

In J.T Everest’s spare time he was said to be an avid farmer who even won two years of Agricultural Society awards for the best cultivated farm. Both him and his wife were devoted members of the Peru Village Methodist Episcopal Church. He was also noted as being buried with Masonic honors.
