MILDRED MAYES CAMPBELL, 96, of Columbus, Texas passed away on December 10, 2009 in Columbus. She was born on June 5, 1913 in Columbus and daughter of Ethelbert Bruce Mayes and Zula Sanders Mayes. She was a teacher and taught school in Roswell, New Mexico, Missouri City, TX, Corpus Christi, TX, Laredo Junior College in Laredo, TX, Austin High School and Johnston High School in Austin, TX, Wharton County Junior College in Wharton, TX, and also worked in Fort Hood, Texas for the war department during World War II. She took postgraduate courses at University of Texas in Austin. Mildred belonged to these organizations: Delta Kappa Gamma, Daughters of American Revolution, United Daughters of Confederacy, Jamestown Society, Colonial Dames of 17th Century, Daughters of Republic of Texas and Huguenot Society of Virginia. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Columbus. She is survived by her son, Bruce Kent Austin and wife Patricia of Newport, TN; stepson, William "Bill" Campbell, Jr. of Austin, TX; and stepdaughters, Peggy Jo Young of Dallas, TX, Mary D. Kellerman of Gatesville, TX and Zoe P. Fackler of Riverview, FL. Her parents, first husband Ivan Charles Austin, second husband Edward William Campbell, an infant son, brother Howard Bruce Mayes, and sisters Allie Mae Wilson and Katherine Koliba preceded her in death. Visitation from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm Monday December 14, 2009 at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus, TX with the funeral service at 2:00 pm at the funeral home with Rev. Victor Morrison officiating. Pallbearers are Mike Petter and Junior Friedrich. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery in Columbus.
